US Department of Transportation Issues Important New Safety Rule for Truckers.
On the day before Thanksgiving, a traditionally slow news day, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood made an important announcement that could help reduce the number of truck accidents in Kansas City and across the nation. Interstate Truckers (and Bus Drivers) May No Longer Use Handheld Cell Phones While Driving. The final rule from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) prohibits interstate truck drivers and bus drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. The rule comes 14 months after the FMCSA issued a rule banning texting and driving for all interstate truck drivers. Many companies also prohibit their truck drivers from using a cell phone while driving and the American Trucking Associations supports the FMCSA / PHMSA rule and encourages states to follow suit to improve safety outcomes for truckers and other motorists. Penalties for Using a Handheld Cell Phone While Driving. Interstate truckers or bus drivers who are caught using a cell phone and driving face potentially life changing penalties. A first offense could result in a fine of $2,750. Multiple offenses could result in the loss of a commercial driver’s license which would, in effect, end their careers. Trucking companies also face potentially significant penalties if they allow or encourage their interstate commercial drivers to use a cell phone while driving. Trucking companies could face fines of up to $11,000 for each offense. What to Do if You’ve Been Hurt in a Kansas City Tractor Trailer Crash.
