YAZ, Yasmin, and Ocella linked to serious illness and deaths in Kansas City women

What are YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella?

YAZ and Yasmin and the generic drug Ocella are birth control pills marketed by Bayer. Like many birth control pills, these pills contain estrogen and a progestin; however, these pills contain the unique hormone drospirenone (DSRP). The manufacturer claims that dsrp reduces moderate acne and helps treat the emotional and physical symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

YAZ is the most popular form of birth control in the United States and is one of the top-selling drugs worldwide

What are the serious side effects of YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella?

All birth control pills have side effects. They can increase the risk of blood clots, pulmonary embolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, or heart attack especially in smokers and women over 35. However, these risks are even higher in women taking YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella.

The synthetic hormone DSRP is not found in any other birth control pills and it is linked to elevated potassium, a condition called hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia can lead to disrupted heart rhythms and blood clots. Other health problems linked to YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella include gall bladder disease, gall bladder removal, pancreatitis, kidney failure, seizures, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), hepaic adenomas, and, occasionally, sudden deaths.

How many women have been injured by YAZ, Yasmin or Ocella?

We don’t know. The FDA received over 50 reports of YAZ and Yasmin-related deaths between 2004 and 2008. Most of these deaths involved hyperkalemia or increased levels of potassium. Some of these deaths occurred in healthy women as young as 17. The British Medical Journal reported concern about the drug causing DVT in 2002. They cited over 40 cases.

What is the FDA doing?

The FDA has been reprimanding Bayer, the manufacturer of YAZ and Yasmin for misleading commercials, not disclosing the dangers of the drugs, and for encouraging the use of YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella for conditions other than those for which it is approved. The makers of YAZ have also been reprimanded for not disclosing risk information on their sponsored links on internet search engines.
