The Workplace Safety Index: The Ten Most Common Types of On-the-job Injuries in Kansas City

The annual Workplace Safety Index combines information from workers’ compensation claims, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and the National Academy of Social Insurance in order to analyze the causes of serious workplace injuries. In 2010, the Workplace safety Index for 2008 data was published.

In 2008, the top ten most common workplace accidents that caused serious injury included:

1. Overexertion (25.1%) –
Overexertion injuries include injuries related to lifting pushing, pulling, holding, carrying, or throwing. In many cases, overexertion injuries occur when a physical job is done without adequate breaks or without proper safety precautions. A construction worker may experience overexertion from hauling heavy loads of drywall without adequate assistance.

2. Fall on Same Level (15.7%) – These injuries occur when an employee slips or trips over an obstacle. Workplace slips often occur when supplies or equipment are left in walkways or work areas.

3. Bodily Reaction (10.1%) – Bodily reaction injuries result from an incident of free bodily motion (such as bending, climbing, reaching, standing, sitting, or slipping or tripping without falling). If an employee injured his back while bending, he may have a bodily reaction injury.

4. Struck by an Object (10.0%) – Being hit by a falling object can cause serious injuries including traumatic brain injury and wrongful death. These injuries are common in warehouses and other storage areas where heavy boxes maybe placed overghead.

5. Fall to Lower Level (9.9%) –
As the name implies, these injuries occur when an employee falls down from a higher area. Examples include falls from ladders or roofs.

6. Highway Accidents (4.3%) – Any injury sustained in a Missouri workplace accident that occurs while an employee is performing his or her job is considered a workplace injury.

7. Caught In/Compressed By (4.2%) – These accidents occur when a body part gets caught in or compressed by a piece of equipment. This may occur because of improper training, a lack of safety precautions or an equipment malfunction.

8. Struck Against Object (4.2%) – These accidents occur when a moving employee strikes a stationary object. For example, a struck by object accident can occur if an employee hits his head on a low-hanging beam.

9. Repetitive Motion (3.4%) – Many jobs require an employee to repeat the same actions over long periods of time. These daily actions can have long-term effects on muscles and tendons. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common repetitive motion injury among cashiers and office workers.

10. Assaults and Violent Acts (1.1%) – When assaults occur in the line of duty or while a person is working, they are considered a workplace injury.
