Top Causes of Kansas City On-The-Job Injuries #2: Violent Crimes

What is the second leading cause wrongful death in the workplace? Are you surprised to learn that since1990, violent crimes have been the second most common cause of workplace fatalities?

Each year, an average of 2 million people become victims of violent crime while working in the United States. Three quarters of violent workplace injuries are due to simple assault; one fifth of the injuries are due to aggravated assaults. Other workplace violent crimes include rapes, sexual assaults, robberies and homicides. There are approximately 1,000 on-the-job homicides per year.

Violence in the workplace accounts for 18% of all violent crimes.

Police officers, corrections officers, taxi drivers, security workers and bar tenders are most likely to become victims of violent crimes. But, emergency workers, bank tellers, cashiers, sales people, medical provider, government employees and anyone who works with the public may become a crime victim. Homicide is the leading cause of job related death in the retail trade, finance/insurance/real estate, and services industries.

Some jobs are inherently dangerous. A police officer knows he will work with violent criminals. However, he must be provided with the tools, training and back-up necessary to do his job as safely as possible. But, in most cases workplace violence is associated with robbery.

Men who are victims of violent crimes at work are more likely to be attacked by a stranger. Women who are attacked while on the job are more likely to be attacked by a co-worker, casual acquaintance or family member. Thirty thousand women a year are raped or otherwise sexually assaulted while on the job.

Employers can prevent workplace violence by installing proper security systems, providing workers with training to recognize and diffuse potentially violent situations and by performing background checks on employees.

Victims of workplace violent crime are eligible to receive Missouri Workers' Compensation for their injuries.
