What does the Long-Term Care Ombudsman do? How can his office help residents of Kansas City nursing homes?

Every state has a long-term care ombudsman. The ombudsman is a government official whose job is to advocate for residents of nursing homes and other long term care facilities. The office of the ombudsman has three primary purposes:

1. The ombudsman office handles resident complaints.
The primary concern of the ombudsman’s office is to support nursing home residents and their families. They can help resolve problems or disputes with the nursing home staff and they will investigate complaints of improper care or negligence. In general, they will work with both parties to make sure the nursing home resident’s rights are protected and to help solve the problem. In cases of serious neglect or abuse, they will call in the proper authorities.

2. The ombudsman provides information and assistance regarding nursing homes.
The office of the long-term care ombudsman is a good source for information if you are looking for a nursing home for your loved one or have questions about resident’s rights, possible neglect, proper care or services for the elderly.

3. The ombudsman advocates for the state and national rights of long-term care residents.
State ombudsmen work with other groups that advocate for the elderly to recommend and influence government policy that effects the residents of nursing homes.

If you suspect that your loved one is the victim of nursing home abuse or neglect, calling the office of the long-term care ombudsman is a good first step to solving the problem. You don’t need to have proof – even the feeling that something isn’t right is a good reason to call.

In Missouri, you can contact the State Office of Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program at (573) 526-0727 or (800) 309-3282. In Kansas, you can reach the Kansas Long-Term Care Ombudsman Office (877) 662-8362.
