Spring Break Safety Tips Part 2

Distractions can be deadly for Kansas City youth as they take to the roadways for spring break and summer adventures. Following safety tips like the following can help everyone have a good time, and arrive back home tanned, happy, and safe.

Do not become distracted. Distracted driving kills people. There is simply no other way to put it. The startling fact is that texting and driving is more dangerous statistically than driving drunk. But, there is more to driving distracted than just texting. Talking on a cell phone can steal away your attention where it is needed the most. If you are not the one behind the wheel, do your part and keep calm and quiet during the ride. It is tempting when you are in a car with a group of friends to mess around and have fun, but it should never be done at the expense of safety. Loud noises, speaker-blowing music, and physical shenanigans have no place in a moving car. Help the driver keep his eyes and attention on the road.

Use caution at night. If you will be doing a lot of driving after dark, make sure that you do it safely. Be sure your headlights function properly. Use the dimmer switch appropriately so as not to blind other motorists. If you have a condition called night blindness, let someone else get behind the wheel after the sun goes down.

Share the road. Other drivers are on the road constantly. Make sure that you are a good motorist and give others the courtesy you expect in return. When it comes to tractor-trailers, give them all the space and room you can. Truck drivers carry large loads at high speeds; it is in everyone’s interest to give them as wide of a berth as possible. Communicate your intentions through turn signals. Go the speed limit and avoid using the roadways as your personal Indy 500 raceway. The fun starts once your feet hit the sandy beaches, save horsing around for the time and place where it is the safest.

Check your vehicle carefully. Make sure that everything is functioning properly not just before you set out, but along the way as well. Your tires, for example, take a lot of punishment on long trips. Watch for signs of wear and keep them properly inflated. Take the time to have leaks and other problems repaired promptly. It is worth the extra time to arrive safely at your destination.

If you do get into trouble, call for help immediately. Contact emergency services and await instructions. If someone is injured, follow the advice of emergency personnel very carefully. Contact law enforcement and provide them with the information they request. Withhold statements of fault until you have spoken with your insurance agent or a Kansas City personal injury lawyer from Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys.
