New Ways for Parents to Keep Their Teen Drivers Safe Behind the Wheel
Parents of teenagers have a new weapon in the battle to keep their young drivers safe on the road. Parents already face the challenge of teaching their teens to be safe on the road, safe from substance abuse, and safe from the mistaken thought that that they are invincible. Kansas City parents now have some tools that can help them keep their teens and others safe on the road.
Distracted driving is extremely dangerous, but since it does not carry the stigma that underage drinking or illegal drug use does, some parents may not recognize the inherent dangers it poses to their children and to the public in general. Some things parents may not know about distracted driving:
In 2009, 450,000 people were injured in distracted driving crashes
In the same year, 5,500 lives were lost because of distracted driving
Cell phone users are 4 times more likely to cause an injury accident
Texting requires you to take your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds, that is forever when you are driving down the road
Texting drivers take longer to stop on the average than drunk drivers
People who text are ten times more likely to drive out of their lane than other drivers
Clearly, texting and driving is a very dangerous thing to do. Parents are not left without some help however. Fortunately there are things [aren’t scan use to help limit the likelihood that a teen with engage in such risky behavior.
The following are just a few applications available on many of today’s smart phones: Drivesafe.ly Pro turns an Android, Blackberry, I-Phone, or Windows Mobile device into a talking box. New texts and emails are read aloud while the driver keeps his or her hands on the wheel. The app also has an automated response feature. The app requires a yearly fee or around &14 per single use, with family plans available. Key2SafeDriving is a Blackberry app that works with some other smart phones. The app can tell when the car is running and limits phone use. Automated messages are snet to incoming text messages. Parents can control the app with a password feature and will receive an alert if the app is bypassed. The app costs around $100 annually. Text Arrests works by disabling email and text, locking the phone screen so that nothing can be sent or read while driving. It works with Android phones and has a basic version for free with an advanced form for around $8 per month.
