Babysitters and Car Safety Seats

Kansas City parents who leave their children with a babysitter during the workday have many concerns to deal with. One of the last things they want to worry about is whether or not the person charged with caring for their young child will do so safely. For example, parents want to know that they can trust their child care provider to follow the safest practices if they must drive a car with their child in tow.
Here are a few guidelines to consider:
  1. Insist that your sitter use only an approved car seat. If the sitter has a car seat already that he or she plans to use for your child, ask questions about the seat’s history. Inspect the seat yourself before your child is ever strapped in. If the seat is second hand or you suspect that it might have been in another accident, it would be worth the price to provide one of your own.
  2. Have a serious conversation with your child’s caregiver about the use of a cell phone while he or she is driving. Texting and driving is dangerous and deadly. Talking on the phone is another risk that is not worth the risk with your child (or any child) along for the rise.
  3. It might sound a little absurd but you need to be sure that your sitter knows how to use a car seat properly. Sitters with older children of their own may not be familiar with the newest car seats. Sitters without children of their own may simply have no idea how to properly secure the seat in the vehicle, or how to strap our child in.
  4. Is he or she familiar with the most basic safety guidelines? Check to make sure that the sitter is aware that infants in rear facing seats never ride up front, that children under 13 should not sit in the front seat, and that kids under 4 foot 9 inches should be strapped in to a booster seat.
  5. Also, make sure that the sitter knows that children should be buckled up each and every time they ride in the car, even if the ride is only a few blocks. He or she should know to never allow for seat belt sharing, nor give into fits. The car simply does not move if seat belts or safety seats are not in use.
Another consideration for Kansas City parents is to be sure that home day care providers are honest about who might be driving your child around. Communicate your wishes clearly with all potential drivers.
