HPV Vaccine Necessary for Young Boys as Well?

Back in 2006, an advisory committee recommended the use of a new vaccine designed to fight the spread of HPV< human papillomavirus, one of the principle causes of invasive and deadly cervical cancer. As many Kansas City parents no doubt have heard, several groups raised concern when the vaccine was recommended as a regular vaccine for girls as young as 9 years-old.
Then came the recommendation that the use of the vaccine be changed to include young men and boys. The vaccine would, they reasoned, be useful in boys who may spread the sexually transmitted disease themselves to future partners.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) made the recommendation stating that the use of the vaccine in young men and boys would slow the spread of HPV to others, as well as protecting the boys themselves from genital warts and even some forms of cancer.
The HPV vaccine has already been the target of controversy following the initial recommendation that the dosage begin in young girls. Conservative groups cried foul, citing concern over the possibility that administration of the vaccine in children so young would encourage unprotected sexual contact and promiscuity.
The use of the vaccine has been clouded with dangerous side effects, including nearly two dozen deaths. The use of the vaccine has not been as wide spread as developers had hoped, based largely on reports of side effects and the deaths.
The choice is still unclear to many Kansas City parents, who now must weigh this latest recommendation from the CDC for the immunization of their young sons as well as young daughters.
