Kansas City winters are beautiful to behold. But they can spell trouble for the many area residents who fall on the ice and snow every year. Thousands of people are injured or killed in the United States annually as a result of a fall. Older Americans especially are at risk of life threatening injuries from a fall. Factor in snow and ice and you have a recipe for disaster.
Falls edge out poisonings as the number one at-home accident in the US. Falls are so common that according to one statistic they account for 16,000 deaths across the country each year. No doubt the danger is greater when ice and snow cover the sidewalks and roadways.
What can you do to keep safe in the winter? For one thing, you can avoid those areas which may be the most treacherous. If you are already disabled, try to keep clear of places that are not cleared. Avoid going out when the snow is falling and the ice has not been removed.
If you must go out, do not walk like you would on a sunny day. Walk small. In other words, take small, short steps, or shuffle. If you find yourself on ice or snow, curl your toes inward and make “flat feet” which are more stable on the ice. Use your arms to stay balanced. Avoid carrying heavy loads which may upset your balance and cause a fall.
Look out constantly for patches of ice that are hard to see. If a railing or a handle is available, use it. Use caution if you have to walk on snow; ice cannot be seen beneath the snow. Be extra careful on steps and staircases. Again, use safety railings. Make sure that your winter weather outerwear does not obstruct your view. Keep hats and scarves away from your field of vision.
Properly owners have a great responsibility to make sure that their premises are free of ice and snow. Treatment for ice and snow removal as quickly as possible is imperative during the winter months.
