Spring Break Safety Tips Part 1

Nothing brings young people out like warmer weather and the promise of an extended break from school work and the normal routine. Each year over the spring break season, thousands of youth flock to fun destinations on search of fun and sun and memories that will last forever. The same holds true in the warm months of summer for Kansas City kids who hit the road in anticipation of fun.

Understandably, fun in the sun comes with its share of risks. The more time young drivers spend behind the wheel, the greater risk they run to finding themselves in the driver’s seat of trouble. Put a group of youngsters together and good judgment and reason sometimes take a holiday.

What can Kansas City teens do to protect themselves? Learning to act responsibly will no doubt stack the deck in their favor. Following a few rules of the road, each and every time they climb behind the wheel, pays off in the long run for themselves, their passengers, and the other Kansas and Missouri motorists with whom they share the road.

In order to maintain the highest degree of safety, all drivers should follow the following suggestions:

Buckle up. As tempting as it may be to become lax in this rule over many miles of road, the simple truth cannot be ignored. Wearing your seatbelt saves lives. When worn the right way, buckling up will go a long way in sparing your life in the event of a car crash. Even minor accidents can turn major when drivers and passengers are not properly restrained. If you drive a vehicle equipped with an airbag, wearing your seat belt is a must. Be sure to wear it the right way; ignore the temptation to slide the shoulder harness behind your back. Lap only belts are not nearly as effective.

Be prepared. This motto has worked for the Boy Scouts for over a hundred years, and it is good advice to drivers who are on a journey over many miles. Prepare for emergencies. Have with you a kit made up to make life easier in case of an accident or car trouble. Be sure to have detailed maps; remember that GPS devices can be wrong at times. Keep an extra cell-phone battery on hand, charged and ready.

Stay alert and focused. What harm is there in setting your seat back a little for the long drive? Plenty, if you consider the added temptation to dose off. Here’s another little known fact: if you recline your seat, the three-point seatbelt becomes fairly useless. This holds true for passengers as well as drivers. Keep the seat upright and protect yourself.
