In "Small Distractions, Part 1: Driving Safely When There Are Children In Your Car", the Lexington County, MO auto accident lawyers at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys shared four tips to help you avoid being distracted by your own children while driving. Here are five more tips.
1. Plan ahead. I know how hard it is to get the door with small children, but try to allow extra time so you don't feel rushed. Children have a way of knowing when a parent is stressed and will often act up accordingly.
2. If your child wants attention, make the child wait. What is more important, a happy (for this moment) child or a healthy and safe child? Tell your child you are driving and you will help them once you reach your destination. The child may get upset, but eventually she will learn to wait. If you believe in rewards for good behavior, you can offer her a treat for being patient until you reach your destination.
3. Pull over. If your child needs immediate attention or you are finding it hard to concentrate because of the screaming, find a safe spot and stop your vehicle. Gas stations or shopping center parking lots are perfect rest stops. Take a deep breath, take care of your child and then get back on your way.
4. Distract your children, so they don't distract you. Play a children's CD or sing a favorite song using the wrong words. Offer a kiss to the first person to find a yellow car or a firetruck or a green light. Make up a story and let your children fill in the words.
5. Avoid distracting behavior. Stay off the phone, don't text, don't eat or drink or put on your make-up while driving. Your children are precious. and their lives are in your hands. Before you know it, they will be driving; it's up to you to set a good example.
These tips can help you stay safe, but they can't prevent every accident. If the unthinkable happens and you or your child is injured in a Missouri distracted driving accident, the Lexington County, MO auto accident lawyers at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys would like to help.
