Disturbing Trends in the Automotive World

While the world of automakers continues to make cars more energy efficient and safer, another trend in the industry has some people worried over the effects of technology on safety. Known as cockpit technology, the wave seems to be reaching a fever pitch as more and more creature comforts are added into newer car models. What do these enhancements mean for Kansas City drivers?

According to recent headlines, nothing very good can come of automakers turning cars into personal entertainment systems on wheels. How many cases of death and injury do we already hear from distracted drivers? Does is make sense to add the ability to check your Facebook status in a vehicle that you will be busy enough keeping safely on the road at speeds of 50, 60, or even 70 miles per hour?

It is the trend, so says a recent survey by CNN. The poll looked at the shopping habits of car buyers under 31 years-old. For many of them, the appeal of the car is not rooted in its safety features or even performance standards, but rather what creature comforts in terms of entertainment the car has to offer.

Consider the following that the same CNN survey found that in 2009 distracted drivers were responsible for injuring over 500,000 people, killing more than 5,500. Also consider the startling facts the Huffington Post released concerning the effects of texting on drivers. Did you know:

1. Drivers who text take eight times as long to stop than drunk drivers

2. It can take a driver who was texting up to 25 feet to come to a stop, where a drunk driver requires just four feet.

3. Typically, texting drivers take their eyes off the road for as much as five seconds each time they look at their electronic device of choice. Five seconds is enough times to, at some speeds, travel as far as 29 car lengths. Consider what can happen in 29 car lengths, each and every time the driver decides to look at another text.

Ask yourself this question: Do drivers, especially younger generations of drivers, need the ability to text and drive, have cars equipped with Wi-Fi technology, or drive around in a glorified I-pod on wheels?
