Automobile insurance shoppers are always on the lookout for a good deal. In fact, the majority of car insurance commercials lead with money saving offers as the main attraction for prospective customers. In this economic climate, it is little wonder why Kansas City would be attracted to the cheapest deal on car insurance they can find.
But is cheaper always better? If you are not careful, you may end up leaving off important aspects of coverage and lose more money in the long run. Take a hard look at a discount insurance policy before you commit. Be sure the savings will not leave you high and dry and without adequate coverage in the event that you need it. Make sure you know what your policy offers, and that you understand the car insurance policy terms.
Always understand your state's minimum coverage laws. In either Missouri or Kansas, you are required to carry some form of liability insurance. If you are caught driving without the minimum requirement, you may face some stiff fines if you are pulled over. Don't rely on your agent to look out for you; check things out yourself and compare any discount.
Make sure that you carry coverage for an uninsured motorist. The total cost of this coverage is usually less than 10 percent of your policy, and can cover you if you are hit with by another driver who has little or no car insurance coverage themselves. Make sure you add on enough uninsured coverage; do not just assume the smallest coverage amount is going to be enough.
Insure what you drive. If you just drove a newer car off the lot, carrying liability is not going to replace that car in the event of a collision. Insure what your needs are going to be. Check with your bank's policies as well; you may be required to provide a certain amount of coverage per the terms of your loan.
If you are concerned about money, consider the amount of cash you may have on hand if there is an accident. Make sure your deductible-the amount of money you are required to pay out of pocket for a claim-is in the ball park of affordable for your normal cash flow rate. In other words, be wary of lower premiums based on a deductible of $1,000 if coming up with that amount is going to be next to impossible.
Look for ways you can save money. Most insurance companies offer discounts for drivers with good records, or for policy holders who "bundle" their auto insurance along with their home owner's coverage and even a health insurance policy. Dig around for discounts if you have been in the military, or if you pay a lump sum premium every six months instead of monthly.
