The Medical Malpractice Epidemic, Are You a Victim?
THE SCOPE OF THE MEDICAL MALPRACTICE EPIDEMIC
The Harvard Medical Practice Study in 1999 revealed that more than half of the injuries caused by medical management (rather than caused by the patient’s initial injury) were preventable injuries. The study found that another 25% of those injuries caused by medical management were due to negligence. Unfortunately, medical malpractice can occur at any stage of treatment. While the majority of the medical management injuries occur in a hospital, 20% of all medical management errors occur in private treatment.
An article in Wall Street Journal from May 2006 reported that a Wisconsin hospital created a reporting “hotline” for their staff to report medical errors and near-misses on an anonymous basis. Before the system was even installed, the hospital had already received 250 reports a month. After the “hotline” was installed, these reports increased to an astounding 3000 per month. According to the article, the cases confirmed the hospital administrators’ suspicion that the hospital wasn’t sufficiently addressing issues of safety.
Even doctors, our healthcare system’s ultimate insiders, find our current healthcare system daunting. An article in Time Magazine from April 2006 exposed this reality in an article: Question: What Scares Doctors? Answer: Being The Patient. The article revealed that doctors themselves believe that getting good medical care is challenging.
A doctor commented that while advanced medical technology is now available to pinpoint an exact tumor location, thread a catheter into the brain to open a clogged artery, and pulverize a kidney stone without breaking the skin, simple things like getting a timely MRI, getting the correct drugs at the right time, and ensuring all healthcare providers know which side of your brain they are to operate on can cause big problems. A pediatrician noted that any patient with significant medical needs faces a very complicated healthcare system with many handoffs, locations, and players, a complicated system with more ways to break down. The physician further noted that it almost took a lucky break to get through a hospitalization in the U.S. with just the right amount of treatment—no more and no less than necessary. A landmark study by the Rand Corporation in 2003 revealed that U.S. adults received only about 55% of the care that was recommended for their conditions. Blood sugar levels were not regularly measured for 24% of diabetes patients. More than 50% of those with hypertension did not have their blood pressure controlled; 33% of the asthma patients that were eligible to get inhaled steroids were not provided them.
Recently, the Institute of Medicine reported that medication mistakes lead to 7,000 fatalities per year and harm at least 1.5 million U.S. citizens per year. These medication mistakes cost more than 3.5 billion dollars. The study revealed about one medication error a day for hospitalized patients, most often involving the manner in which drugs are either prescribed or administered.
