Herniated Lumbar Disc

Research has shown that about 90% of all disc herniations occur near the bottom of the spine in the locations known as lumbar segment four and lumbar segment five (L4 – L5) or lumbar segment 5 or sacral segment 1 (L5 – S1). This can lead to pain through two different nerves and the symptoms for this type of disc herniation are described as follows:

• “L5 nerve impingement from a herniated disc can cause weakness in extending the big toe and potentially in the ankle (foot drop). Numbness and pain can be felt on top of the foot, and the pain may also radiate into the buttock.
• S1 nerve impingement from a herniated disc may cause loss of the ankle reflex and/or weakness in ankle push off (patients cannot do toe rises). Numbness and pain can radiate down to the sole or outside of the foot “

Due to the symptoms described above, an average person who sustains the injury may have severe pain and problems when trying to perform the most medial tasks around the house or in the office.

Treatment options for lumbar herniated discs may vary but the most common is physical therapy. For the majority of patients the pain should start to alleviate itself within the timespan of six weeks or so, but during this time the patient may try other forms of treatment, which may include physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication.
