Soft Tissue Injuries: Common Causes & Treatment Options
Back problems are a common occurrence throughout the United States, including Missouri and Kansas, and these unfortunate conditions torment their victims and often cause people who have contracted these conditions to lose mobility and make the ab
ility to perform daily functions a difficult and painful if not impossible chore. One category of back problems is commonly known as soft tissue injuries. These injuries often affect the muscles, but can also impact the tendons, ligaments, and nerves in the back.
Causes of soft tissue injuries vary and these injuries can develop in one’s back through either direct trauma or indirect trauma. Direct trauma can occur when one engages in such activities such as team sports and also commonly is the result of several types of accidents. Indirect trauma tends to occur from overuse of tissues. Examples of developing this type of trauma include aggravation of the muscles through tedious or repetitive factory work, farm work, and other types of repetitive activities.
Treatments for the mild cases of soft tissue injuries include but are not limited to:
Applying ice or heat
Rest and overall avoidance of physical activity
Physical therapy
Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories (e.g. Tylenol or Advil)
Massage
The healing process can take a significant period of time as the repair of the areas in question is a strenuous process on the body and the tissue needs to be restored properly. There can be significant pain and discomfort during the healing process. If you think you have developed a soft tissue injury, and particularly if it seems to be taking longer to heal than anticipated, it is highly recommended that you contact your physician or a pain specialist in a timely manner.
