Differences between Sprain and Strain, Treatments

Sprains and strains are known throughout the medical profession as somewhat minor injuries because they have no relation to fractured bones and deal primary with tendons and ligaments depending on the injury. These particular injuries are also known to heal quickly and the treatments for both are quite similar. The key difference between the two is that the sprain generally relates to ligament tissue and strains are injuries to muscles or tendons.

A sprain most commonly occurs due to unanticipated movement which may come as a result of falling, sporting injuries, and generally accidents of sort that involve bodily harm. Sudden motions from these accidents exert the joints in ways that joints are simply not supposed to be exerted and this movement results in the tearing of a ligament or ligaments.

A strain generally occurs as a result of lots of strain put on the muscles during excessive use or exercise. Muscles are meant to stretch to a certain a degree, but if they are stretched too far, then strains are the result.

The most common symptoms for these injuries include but are not limited to:
  • Swelling
  • Throbbing Aches
  • Reduced Mobility
  • Surface Bruising

The generally recommended method to treat a sprain is the RICE method ...rest, ice, compress, and elevate. Massages and cold or heat therapy may also be used to treat these minor, yet common injuries. If the pain caused by either a strain or a sprain is relatively serious, splints or braces may be necessary to ensure proper healing. If after a reasonable amount of time, the pain does not subside, one is highly advised to seek the opinion of a physician because the pain may not be due to a sprain or strain, but rather a more serious condition.

Many injuries have the potential to be very serious and should not be taken lightly. You are well advised to consult your doctor regarding your treatment in any injury case.
