Toyota Recalls Millions of Vehicles and Suspends Sales of Eight Models
Toyota announced on January 21, 2010 that it is recalling approximately 2.3 million vehicles to correct problems with sticking accelerator pedals. The company advises that certain accelerator mechanism may stick in a depressed position or return slowly to the idle position. The models involved in the recall are as follows:
RAV4 2009 – 2010
Corolla 2009 – 2010
Matrix 2009 – 2010
Avalon 2009 – 2010
Camry Certain models: 2007 – 2010
Highlander 2010
Tundra 2007 – 2010
Sequoia 2008 – 2010
In conjunction with the recall, Toyota announced on January 26, 2010 that it has instructed its dealers to temporarily suspend sales and production of the recalled vehicles. Production is to be suspended for the week of February 1, 2010, however, it is unclear when production and sales will be resumed.
Although the recall and freeze on sales and production may have an adverse affect on the company in light of increasing competition from other manufactures, Toyota indicates that its focus is on making sure its existing customers and future customers have confidence in their vehicles.
The sticking accelerator pedal recall announced on January 21, 2010 is different from the ongoing recall of Toyota and Lexus vehicles involving pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place floor mats. That recall was announced in November of 2009 and involves some of the same vehicles.
Camry 2007 – 2010
Avalon 2005 – 2010
Prius 2004 – 2009
Tacoma 2005 – 2010
Tundra 2007 – 2010
ES350 2007 – 2010
IS250 2006 – 2010
IS350 2006 - 2010
Toyota’s website contains “Frequently Asked Questions for the Sticking Accelerator Pedal Recall” that provides drivers of the involved Toyota models some additional information about what to do if they experience a sticking accelerator pedal, what to do if they notice that their accelerator is hard to depress or slow to return and what actions they need to take as an owner of a recalled vehicle.
Industry commentators have indicated that the recall, suspending sales and suspending production are all positive steps toward reassuring the public that they are serious about getting to the bottom of the problem. Some point out that older owners with a prior positive experience with Toyota are more likely to be forgiving of Toyota than those who are younger and have not had a positive experience with a Toyota product.
In the late 1980’s, Audi experienced similar complaints and was almost driven out of business when it failed to aggressively address unintended acceleration claims.
Although the number of reports of Toyota accelerator pedals sticking is presently very low, the Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys encourages the owners of the affected models to take the recall seriously. Every effort should be made to remedy whatever problems exist so that Toyota owners as well as the driving public are not at risk.
