Teenage Driving Accidents: The Causes ...

Causes of Teenage Driving Accidents

Teenagers comprise a large portion of drivers in today’s society. However, many of today’s teenage drivers are more susceptible to car accidents and other unfortunate incidents involving motor vehicles. According to the CDC, there are several reasons for the discrepancy between teenage drivers and adult drivers.

One of the most probable reasons stated by the CDC is the lack of experience and driving awareness. Due to this, teenage drivers are less likely to be able to identify hazardous situations as well as more likely to give more be speeding and drive at a closer distance to other cars than more experienced drivers.

Alcohol also causes a significant amount of accidents involving teenagers. Most likely due to the previously mentioned lack of experience, the probability of a teenager of getting into an accident after ingesting any amount of alcohol is greater than that or any other age group. Here are some interesting facts regarding teenage drivers and alcohol according to the CDC.

  • At all levels of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), the risk of involvement in a motor vehicle crash is greater for teens than for older drivers.10
  • In 2008, 25% of drivers ages 15 to 20 who died in motor vehicle crashes had a BAC of 0.08 g/dl or higher.10
  • In a national survey conducted in 2007, nearly three out of ten teens reported that, within the previous month, they had ridden with a driver who had been drinking alcohol. One in ten reported having driven after drinking alcohol within the same one-month period.10
  • In 2008, nearly three out of every four teen drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes after drinking and driving were not wearing a seat belt.10
  • In 2008, half of teen deaths from motor vehicle crashes occurred between 3 p.m. and midnight and 56% occurred on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.10
