Crib Safety Recall of Massive Proportions

Stork Craft/Fisher-Price Drop-Side Cribs Recalled Due to

Potential Infant Entrapment, Suffocation and Injury

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, has announced the voluntary recall of Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including approximately 147,000 that are branded with the Fisher-Price label.

The recall involves approximately 1.2 million cribs distributed throughout the United States. The cribs have been sold at major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Sears, J.C. Penney, Kmart, USA Baby stores and online retailers Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com.

As a result of the defects in the recalled cribs, the drop-side may detach. When this occurs, a space is created between the crib mattress and the drop-side. This can lead to an infant being trapped in the space and suffocation can occur. If the drop-side completely detaches, an infant can fall from the crib.

At the time of recall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission was aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment. Twenty of these resulted in falls, fifteen involved entrapment and four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation.

Clearly, this is a significant problem that should not be ignored. Parents and others using these cribs are advised to stop using them immediately!
