Consumer Product Safety Commission Announces Recall of Roman Shades and Roll Up Blinds Due to Risk of Strangulation

On December 15, 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that multiple companies were recalling millions of units of Roman shades and roll up blinds due to a serious risk of strangulation to young children.

Since 2006, there have been reports of five deaths and multiple near strangulations involving Roman shades. There have been reports of three deaths since 2001 involving roll up blinds.

It is reported that these events occur with Roman shades when a child’s neck is placed between the inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind, or when the cord itself is wrapped around a child’s neck. With roll up blinds, strangulation can occur when a child’s neck becomes caught in the lifting loop.

Parents are advised to take the following steps with regard to existing window coverings:
  • Check window coverings to be certain that there are no cords that are accessible to children;
  • Make loose cords inaccessible to children; and
  • Move cribs and beds away from windows with corded window blinds

The window coverings recalled have been sold by numerous manufacturers and retailers found in Missouri and Kansas, including Walmart, J.C. Penney, Restoration Hardware, Ace Hardware, Pottery Barn, Big Lots and many others.

Although existing blinds may be retrofitted or repaired, cordless window coverings are recommended in any home where children are present. Retrofit instructions can be found at: www.windowcoverings.org/how to retrofit.html
