According to the November issue of “Radiology,” a study reveals that radiologists may be reluctant to reveal errors made during the mammography process. The study involved a hypothetical question in which the radiologists were asked how they would handle an error in a given situation. The study found that only 14% would inform the patient of the error and 26% would probably inform the patient. 51% of the radiologists stated they would only let the patient know of the error if they were asked.

What do these statistics mean for you? Not only has your breast cancer diagnosis been delayed therefore delaying treatment but the person that's best capable of explaining why or how this occurred does not want to share this information with you. Since the study shows that 51% of the radiologists admitted that they would inform the patient of the error if asked, don't be afraid to question your treatment providers.

The question remains: why are radiologists willing to withhold such valuable information from their patients? It has been found that failing to diagnose or delaying the diagnosis of breast cancer are often litigated in the medical malpractice field, which may lead to radiologists fearing litigation preventing them from communicating errors to their patients. The authors of the study noted that some positions felt that informing the patient of errors could add additional stress for patients that could potentially outweigh the benefits of communicating openly with patience of errors made. Another potential reason identified for failing to disclose errors was that a physician may not feel confident in their ability to communicate with a patient.

The information above represents the importance of asking questions and taking an active role in your treatment.
