Court Appearance Tips For Clients: Dressing For Success

Court Appearance: Dressing for Success when going to Trial in Kansas City, Missouri

It is important to understand that while appearance is not directly related to the outcome of a court case, it can strongly influence the way a judge or jury views you and your case. An appropriate appearance can help the most important people in the room take you seriously. Because of this, it is wise to calculate an outfit into your court budget if necessary. Here are some tips for appropriate court appearance:

1. The courtroom is a formal place. Dress up like you would for a job interview. Avoid sneakers, flip flops, jeans, t-shirts or other casual clothing.

2. Judges are generally conservative. Avoid trendy clothing, loud colors, excessive jewelry and revealing outfits. Try to appear serious, modest and ordinary by not calling attention to yourself.

3. If you are a woman, make sure to wear undergarments such as a bra, slip and hose, and make sure they are not showing inappropriately such as a visible bra strap. Wear a suit, a dress or a blouse and skirt and do not wear spike heels or open-toed shoes. Keep your hairstyle simple and away from your face.

4. If you are a man, wear a suit with a jacket and a tie, or just a shirt and a tie if you don't own a jacket. Never wear a hat, and be sure to remove your coat before entering the courtroom.

5. Do not wear strong perfume, cologne or aftershave and leave all weapons such as pocketknives and guns at home. If you are trying to be awarded money, take off all expensive jewelry and watches.

6. Cover up all body art and tattoos with makeup or clothing. Do not chew gum and be prepared for all bags and purses that enter the courtroom to be screened or searched.

7. Wear clothes you are comfortable in. People can sense when you are uncomfortable and nervous. Constantly adjusting your clothing is also distracting and can draw negative attention to you.
