A Missouri Worker's Guide to Preventing On-the-job Back Injuries
Does your back hurt? You are not alone. Low back pain affects approximately one million American workers and causes more lost work days than any other musculo-skeletal disorder. Jobs that require constant standing, heavy lifting, awkward positions, repetitive motion or even sitting put a strain on the back and cause back injury.
Causes of back injuries:
Force. Lifting or moving heavy objects puts force on the back. Putting too much force on your back may cause injury.
Repetition. Repeating a movement, especially an awkward movement, can lead to muscle fatigue or injury.
Posture. Posture refers to your position when sitting, standing or performing a task. In general, a person’s body can tolerate being in one position for about 20 minutes before it becomes uncomfortable. Sitting or standing for long periods can cause the body to become tired. This can lead to poor posture and lower back pain.
Stress. Stress can lead to muscle tension and tightness, which can cause or exasperate back pain.
If your job is hard on your back, these steps can help you prevent back injury:
1. Be fit: Regular exercise that strengthens your back and abdominal muscles will help your posture and prevent injury.
2. Pay attention to posture: When standing, occasionally rest one foot on a stool or small box. Squat, don’t bend, to do work. If you sit for long periods, choose a chair that supports your back and adjust the chair so that your feet stay flat on the floor.
3. Lift properly: Squat, don’t bend; let your legs do the work; keep objects close to your body; and get help with heavy loads.
4. Examine your work space and look for ergonomic solutions that will decrease force and repetition and help you maintain a safe, healthy posture. Keep your workspace free of clutter that can cause slips and falls.
5. Change position frequently and stretch before physical labor or after being in one position for 15 minutes or longer.
6. Take breaks to avoid over exertion.
7. If your back hurts, stop any activities that increase the pain.
8. Reduce stress.
If you have suffered a back injury while at work or from a work activity, you should report the incident to your employer and seek immediate medical attention. Seeking medical help is important. Many job injury claims can be difficult to prove; the Missouri Worker's Compensation insurance company may insist that your injury is due to a pre-existing condition or a non-work-related activity.
