New Driver? Learn Why Your Teen Is At High Risk For A Missouri Car Accident.
Practice makes perfect, and a new study shows that this is especially true for teen drivers. Teen drivers are 50 percent more likely to be involved in a Missouri car accident in their first month of driving than after they've had a year of experience driving on their own. And the more experience, the better: teen drivers are twice as likely to be involved in an accident in their first month as they are after they have driven for two years.
These findings come from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and from a study conducted by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center. Researchers at the Highway Safety Research Center analyzed 175,000 involving teen drivers in North Carolina. They found that there are three common mistakes that account for more than half of all crashes in which teen drivers were at least partially at fault:
Failure to reduce speed
Driver inattention
Failure to yield
The study also found that certain types of crashes, particularly those involving left turns, are also more common during the first few months of driving.
Why do teen accidents occur in Missouri?
Most parents drive with their teen until the teen gets their license. They spend time practicing skills like backing up and parallel parking that are needed to pass the driving test. The teen passes the test and immediately starts to drive without supervision. But, although the new driver passed her test with flying colors, she may have little real world driving experience.
The lack of real world experience means that a teen is at risk for a Missouri auto crash. Experts recommend that parents continue to ride with their teens even after the child has received a license. During this time, teens should gradually be exposed to challenging driving situations. However, studies show that parents ride with their teens less than three percent of the time.
Continue driving with your teen, even after he has his license. Gradually introduce challenging driving conditions such as heavy traffic, night driving, and wet weather.
Set limits on passengers. The likelihood of a teen auto accident increases with the number of passengers in the vehicle.
Only allow solo night-time driving when necessary. Night driving is risky for all drivers; practice night driving with your child until you are comfortable with his skills behind the wheel.
Set rules with consequences. A teen driving contract is a good way to introduce your expectations. For more information about teen driving contracts, see our sample teen driving contract.
