More Children's Products Recalled: 8 Tips To Keep Your Child Safe.

In recent months, the U.S. Consumer Safety Product Commission has issued numerous recalls of children’s products including drop-side cribs that may entrap a child’s head, lead and cadmium laden jewelry, strollers that can collapse and infant slings that can cause suffocation.

Parents are busy people. Most of us are balancing work, kids and everyday life. We don’t have time to check the news every day or to look to see if our stroller has been recalled. How can Kansas City parents realistically keep their children safe from dangerous consumer products?

The child injury attorneys at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys offer these tips to busy parents:

1. Avoid buying metal or enameled jewelry at discount retailers such as dollar stores. Inexpensive children’s jewelry is most likely to contain lead or cadmium. Also be careful or trinkets such as lockets that come with books. Instead, try wool, felt or plastic jewelry.

2. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 set standards for the amount of lead and phthalates that can be used in children’s products. Toys should have a label that indicated they have been tested and meet CPSIA standards. Look for this label when buying toys.

3. Register all children’s products such as strollers, cribs and car seats with the manufacturer so you can be notified in the event of a recall.

4. You can also sign up to receive recall notifications from agencies like the CPSC and NHTSA. Just go to their websites.

5. Keep a list of your new and past purchases so you have a quick reference guide of the products in use in their home in the event of a recall. Or, keep a file with all your user manuals. If a recall is announced, you can quickly check to see if you have the product.

6. If a product you own is recalled, stop using it immediately.

7. When purchasing secondhand children's products, go to the products website to look for past recalls.

8. Report any concerns about the safety of a product to the CPSC, 1-800-638-2772.

If your child is injured or killed by a recalled product or a dangerous children’s product, you have the right to file a Missouri child injury claim or a Kansas City wrongful death lawsuit. To learn more about your rights, contact Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys at 1-888-348-2616.
