GRACO CHILDRENS’ STROLLERS RECALLED

Two months after an umbrella stroller recall by MacLaren USA due to the risk of hand and finger amputation, another popular brand of strollers is being recalled for a similar reason.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Graco Children’s Products Inc., of Atlanta, Georgia has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 1.5 million strollers because the stroller’s canopy hinge mechanism poses a risk of to children of fingertip amputation or laceration when the canopy is being opened or closed. To date, there are reports of five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations. Consumers have been advised to stop using the strollers immediately.

The recall applies to the Graco Passage, Alano and Spree strollers and travel systems. The model numbers are as follows:

Graco manufactured two different styles of hinge mechanisms for these stroller models. Only strollers or travel systems with a plastic, jointed hinge mechanism that has indented canopy positioning notches are included in the recall. The model number and manufacture date are located on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.

The recalled strollers were manufactured between October 2004 and February 2008 and were sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide from October 2004 through December 2009.

Consumers with Graco strollers covered by the recall are advised to immediately stop using them and contact Graco to receive a free protective cover repair kit. Consumers can contact Graco between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday at (800) 345-4109, or on their Web site at www.gracobaby.com. Graco has made a video Safety Announcement showing how to attach the hinge covers.
