Every week, dozens of drivers are killed after their car breaks down on the highway. Sometimes these pedestrian highway accidents are caused by drunk drivers or distracted drivers, but sometimes the other driver just didn't see the victim. The Platte County, MO auto accident lawyers at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys offer these tips to keep you safe if your car breaks down while on the road:
If your car starts having a problem while you're driving, work your way towards the right-hand lane and move to the right shoulder of the road. If you can, go to an exit. Get as far from traffic as possible.
If possible, coast along the shoulder till you are on a straight stretch of road and there are no curves in the road behind you. This will help you stay visible and will help you safely get back on the road once your car is running again.
If your car stops on the highway and you can't get off the road, stay in your car! Yes, sitting in a vehicle with moving traffic around you is scary, but you are safer in the car than you are while attempting to cross a high-speed freeway on foot.
Whether you are on the shoulder of the road or stuck in the traffic lane, keep the doors locked.
If it is daylight, turn on the emergency blinkers. If it is dark or cloudy, turn on the interior and exterior lights so you are more visible. If the engine is working, keep it running so the lights don't run the battery down. If you have reflectors or flares, put them six feet behind your vehicle.
Roll down the driver's side window and hang out a white cloth or piece of paper, then roll the window back up so it stays in place. The white cloth alerts other drivers that your vehicle is in trouble and that they should drive around you.
If you need roadside assistance, use your cellphone to call for help. If you don't have a cell phone, stay in your car and wait for help. Get out only if you can see a call box on your side of your side of the road. If you get out, stay as far from traffic as possible and return to your vehicle immediately after making the call.
If someone stops and asks to help, ask them to call the police.
Try not to work on your car while in the road or on the shoulder. But, if you must work on your vehicle, stand on the side away from traffic.
