Prescription Errors: Tips that can keep you safe from dangerous drugs.
Each year, 1.5 million Americans are harmed or killed by prescription mistakes, and even more Americans are at risk of harmful drug interactions because they are taking medications that counteract or interact with each other.
You can avoid becoming a victim of dangerous prescription drugs by following these four steps.
1.Keep a written record of all your medications, what your are taking the medicines for, how often you are taking them, and the dosage you are taking.
2.Let your doctor and pharmacist know which medicines and supplements you are taking. These include:
• Prescription medicines
•Vitamins, dietary supplements, herbs (such as St. John’s Work or Ginkgo biloba or weight loss formulas) and teas
•Non-prescription medicines that you take.
Also, let your doctor know about any allergies that you have, any other illnesses or symptoms that you are suffering, and if you are pregnant or nursing.
3.Get the facts about your medicine.
•Ask your doctor questions. Ask your doctor what the medicine is called, what is the medicine for, how much you should take, and how often you should take it. Make sure that this is what the prescription says. When you get the bottle, check that it has the same information.
•Ask the pharmacist questions. Find out if there is anything you should not eat or drink with the medication. Ask if you should take it with food or on an empty stomach. Ask about normal side effects and about side effects that are dangerous.
4.Stay with your treatment plan.
•Finish all antibiotic prescriptions.
•If you experience unusual side effects, call your doctor or pharmacist. Call, even if it is after hours. If you can’t reach your doctor, someone at the local hospital should be able to answer your questions.
•Never share your medicine.
•If you are told that you need tests to see if the medicine is working or has side-effects, take those tests.
