How to Survive Being Stuck in Your Car in a Missouri Snowstorm

Heavy blizzards have been known to strike in Kansas City. On February 1, 2011, much of Missouri was declared to be in a state of emergency and I-70 was shut down from Kansas City to St. Louis, leaving many travelers stranded in their cars. Some of these drivers were waiting for police to arrive after Missouri car crashes on slippery roads; others just couldn’t travel because the roads were so bad. That was just the worst of several large snowstorms last winter… but this year could be just as bad.

Seventy percent of blizzard deaths occur in cars. Do you know what to do if you become stranded in your vehicle during a snowstorm? Our Buchanan County, MO auto accident lawyers give this advice:
  1. Use your cell phone to call for help, and bundle up—you may have a long wait.
  2. Stay with your vehicle. If you try walking in a severe snow storm, it is easy to lose track of your vehicle. Your car offers shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to find you.
  3. Signal for help. Tie a bright colored cloth to your car antenna or hang it out a rolled-up window. If it’s dark outside, leave your dome light on, as it uses only a small amount of electricity. When it stops snowing, you can try raising your hood to signal for help.
  4. Avoid using your lights or radio. You should save your gas for heating your car.
  5. Only run your engine and heater when necessary. As soon as the car is warm, turn it off. A good rule is to heat your car for ten minutes every hour.
  6. Use anything available to keep your body warm. You can wrap yourself in extra coats, maps, newspapers, shopping bags or even floor mats.
  7. Check that your exhaust pipe isn’t blocked with snow or ice. A clogged exhaust pipe could result in carbon monoxide gas leaking into the passenger compartment, causing dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, brain damage and even death.
  8. Drink half a cup of water every hour. If you have food, eat a little each hour.
  9. Move around to help your circulation, but don't overexert yourself by trying to dig or push your vehicle out of the snow.
  10. Watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia.
