Motorcyclists face a high risk of injury and death because they do not have the same protection as individuals in a car. They risk falling off of their bike after being involved in an accident, getting run over by another vehicle and sliding across the interstate. They risk direct impact to their head and body every time they get on a bike. Motorcyclists have very little protection and in Kansas, they have even less protection than in other states such as Missouri, which does require helmet use.
Although wearing a helmet is not required in Kansas, the following information might encourage you to wear one to protect yourself. Helmets reduce the blow of a collision and it has been found that the best way to protect yourself from head injury after a collision is to wear a helmet.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ("NHTSA") "estimates that motorcycle helmet use saved $1.3 billion in 2002 alone. An additional $853 million would have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets."
"NHTSA estimates that helmets saved 1,784 motorcyclists' lives in 2007, and that 800 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets." NHTSA also found that "helmets are estimated to be 37-percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcyclists."
A study was done examining the change of universal helmet laws in Arkansas and Texas. In
1997, Arkansas and Texas stopped requiring mandatory use of helmets for older drivers. Prior to
the change in law, helmet use was recorded at 97 percent but by mid 1998, helmet use had fallen
dramatically. Only 52 percent of motorcyclists in Arkansas and 66 percent in Texas were
observed wearing helmets.
The important question is "so what does that study mean to me?" Well, immediately following the repeal of mandatory helmet use in those two states, fatalities increased by 21 percent in Arkansas and 31 percent in Texas. Texas Trauma Registry found that the costs for treating traumatic brain injuries increased even though there was very little change in treatment costs for other injuries.
