An Olathe woman, Jill Baker, received an unwanted surprise from her local Walmart service center. Baker reportedly took her Ford Explorer in for a routine $35 oil change. When a Walmart employee was moving her SUV, he jumped the curb, went through a fence, over a 6-foot retaining wall, and crashed nose first into rocks that caused property damage around $9,000 to the vehicle. A Walmart manager contacted Baker to inform her of the accident.
According to Baker, a bad situation was made even worse when Walmart officials offered to either fix the car for $7,100 or give $7,100 cash to the Bakers. The car is worth approximately $9,600. Since the car was not driveable, Walmart paid for a rental car for the Bakers. An insurance adjuster from Walmart, however, told Baker that if they did not accept the $7,100 offer the rental car would no longer be paid for by Walmart. Unfortunately, these kind of insurance tactics are all too common place, especially with injury victims.
Local news station, KMBC, got involved in the situation and contacted Walmart directly. Since then, Walmart has agreed to pay Baker the full value of her vehicle.
