On Thursday, December 8th, 2011, four vehicles collided on K-10 at Renner Road. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the accident was reported a little bit before 6 p.m. Serious injuries were sustained. At least one person was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
There are several things that you can do to avoid highway accidents:
Be sure to be well rested and be comfortable with your route. Allow more than enough time for delays.
Check for construction zone locations and weather-related road conditions. The weather conditions in Kansas and Missourican swiftly can change; change your speed and following distance according to the weather and keep in mind that rain soaked roads can be just as slick as snow and ice.
Make sure your vehicle is ready for travel. Different types of weather can be hard on vehicles. Make sure that your breaks, vehicle’s fluids, wipers, tires, lights, and belts are properly inspected. Have a car emergency kit.
Do not drink before or during your trip and refuse to be in a passenger seat with a drunk driver.
Avoid distractions such as eating while driving, talking on the phone and texting while driving.
Drive defensively and courteously. Do not take other driver’s mistakes personal. Even if the other driver is rude and driving recklessly, be polite. If someone is challenging you, just take a deep breath and get out of the way. Anger only causes more problems.
If your car breaks down, pull as far over on the shoulder as possible, put on your 4-way flashers (hazard lights), stay with your vehicle, lock your doors, and put your windows down a little bit. If you have a cell phone, dial “47” for the nearest Highway Patrol dispatcher.
