The new report that the auto club AAA released compared the cost of the national motor vehicle crash with that of typical traffic congestion. The congestion costs included the loss of the drivers’ time and the price of gas wasted idling in traffic.
The study also found that the average cost of an injury-only crash is only $126,000.
The last time AAA did a study like this was in 2005. At that time, the cost of a fatal car accident was $3.24 million, and the cost of an injury accident was only $68,170.
The cost was calculated by placing financial values on the following components:
· property damage
· lost earnings
· loss of household activities
· medical costs
· emergency services
· travel delays
· vocational rehabilitation
· lost time at work
· administrative costs
· legal costs
· pain
· lost quality of life
Such accidents may bring wrongful death claims into the court systems. In Missouri and Kansas, a “wrongful death” is a death that occurs due to the negligence or misconduct of an individual, company or entity. Causes of wrongful death include any death that could have been avoided had the responsible person not behaved negligently. A wrongful death lawsuit claims that the victim died because of negligence and that his surviving family is entitled to monetary compensation for their losses.
The reason for the study was to encourage Congress to look at road safety as they consider a long-term highway funding bill. They are recommending more investments in proven safety measures such as cable barriers along medians to prevent crossover, modernized roundabouts and rumble strips to reduce the financial impact of such fatal accidents.
AAA makes recommendations to reduce the financial impact of crashes. Among them: more investment in proven safety measures such as cable barriers along medians to prevent crossover accidents, modernized roundabouts and rumble strips.
