Are Cribs a Danger to our Children?

Posted on Feb 17, 2011

According to a recent study released in the journal Pediatrics, there are an average of 26 children injured every day in crib-related accidents.  Dr. Gary A. Smith, lead author of the study and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital was surprised by the findings.  "The most significant findings for me was the number of injuries," said Smith.  "I didn't expect to see 9,500 children a year treated in emergency departments for crib-related injuries."

Smith's groundbreaking study is the first to analyze how many fatal and non-fatal injuries are attributed to cribs, bassinets and playpens.  The data comes from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and they found that from 1990 to 2008, more that 181,000 children under the age of 2 were taken to emergency rooms across the nation for injuries related to at least one of these nursery products.  As might be suspected, falling was the most common cause for injury.  Frighteninly, however, 83% of the injuries were attributed to cribs.

According to Smith, "Children are top-heavy.  When children start to lean out over the top of a rail of a crib, they will topple forward."

If these crib injuries sound familiar, it may be because of the work of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC).  This federal agency, whose job is to insure consumer products do not pose a public health hazard, has been fighting for safer cribs for many years.  In fact, their records indicate that more than 11 million cribs, playpens or bassinets have been recalled since 2007 and the CPSC just announced a voluntary recall of approximately 500,000 bassinets.

The good news from Dr. Smith's study is there is a statistically significant decrease in the rate of crib-related injuries over the 19-year period, but Smith and the CPSC both agree that more can be done to improve the safety of cribs, bassinets and playpens for our children.
