Are Medical Mistakes at Kansas City Hospitals More Common Now than Ever?

Posted on Apr 15, 2011

Medical mistakes are nothing new.  The sad truth is that things go wrong during a surgery.  Often these mistakes lead to a patient fatality and even more often lead to medical malpractice law suits. A team of researchers for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Cambridge, MASS. is trying to determine if hospitals are safer now than they were twelve years ago-- and the answer seems to be-- NO.

In a study published in the journal of health affairs, the researchers studied the medical records of 795 patients at three different hospitals. Using a new method called the "Global Trigger Tool", the team looked for "adverse events" that occurred during procedures, indicating something went wrong. These are described as injuries that happen because of medical error not as a result of the patients underlying condition.  The team found over 300 incidents among the studies patients.

The debate will continue as to how accurate the new method is.  Some doctors feel these numbers are high because the Global Method uses a broader definition of "medical mistake" but others feel it is in fact lower than reality simply because reviewing a report on a procedure is much different than being there first hand to witness.

"There's no doubt that we've made progress," wrote Susan Dentzer, editor of the health journal, "but it's also clear that making any headway has been agonizingly slow."
