Bellevue Parade Injures 15 Children

Posted on Jul 08, 2010

This past weekend in Bellevue, Iowa, locals were celebrating with an Independence Day parade.  During that parade, one of the horses became frightened, and as a result, both horses took off running into the crowd.

Allegedly, one of the horses may have pushed the other horse's bridal off of it.  Something about this caught the animals off guard and frightened them so much that they began to trample straight forward and toward a group of bystanders who were watching the parade.

The sad part of this story is that the victims did not see this coming.  It is believed that the horses barreled on for about six blocks before they came to a hault.  It is unclear at what point the horses trampled over these bystanders, it may have been all at once or throughout their dash.  Either way, there was one person killed and twenty-four injured in total.  Of those twenty-four injured, fifteen were children who could not get out of the way.

But again, this appears to be an accident.  The person who died was a sixty-year old woman by the name of Janet Steines.  She was actually driving the carriage that the two wild horses were pulling.  Her husband was also riding in the carriage, but somehow managed to escape death.

Of all those who were injured, there was one especially heroic woman in the crowd.  His name is Brian Feyen from Dubuque, Iowa.  He and his wife and son were standing right in the horses' path when he pushed his wife and child out of the way.  In an attempt to save the life of his wife and infant son, he threw himself over the top of them.  Brian Feyen actually escaped without any serious injuries, but his wife, Teri Feyen, suffered from multiple broken bones in her legs.

Although Mrs. Feyen suffered from multiple fractures, Mr. Feyen's push was well-intended.  His ten-month-old son escaped the two-horse stampede without any injury whatsoever.

But other families were not so fortunate.  The Feyens are far from concerned about their situation, and they send their thoughs and prayers to the families of the other children who suffered serious injuries on what should have been a day of celebration, not terror.

Dan Schmidt is the father of a six-year-old boy who sustained a fracture to his leg and multiple internal injuries.  As far as we know, the boy's health is improving and his family has positive hopes for his future.  He is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

Childhood is supposed to be full of positive experiences, but obviously, these situations are bound to happen.  This one appears to be an accident, but oftentimes negilgence is involved.  If a child you love has been injured by the negligent or reckless actions of an adult, we urge you to give our Kansas City Child Injury and Accident Attorneys a call.  We are committed to fighting for the justice and compensation child injury and accident victims deserve, and we can help you.
