.During the 2010 NFL season, head injuries continued to become a growing problem. Over the course of the first half of the season, concussions reported indicated a 21% increase from the same point of the season before. Dr. Hashem Ashrafiuon of the University of Villanova, is helping to develop a computer chip technology that could help trasmit data from a player to the sideline while he is playing.
The technology is called the MindScope System. The chip would be embedded into a football player's helmet. The software would record brain wave data and allow coaches and trainers to analyze and diagnose any potential threats to a player.
If Dr. Ashrafiuon and his team are successful the chip would also allow doctors to monitor victims of mild to serious head trauma, patients with sleep disorder, PTSD and victims of brain illness such as Alzheimer's Disease
