Can blood tests detect serious brain injuries in head injury accident victims. According to research performed by Army Col. Dallas Hack, the answer is yes. A preliminary study project conducted by the U.S. Army suggests that by targeting specific proteins in the blood, bio markers can be identified that can help detect traumatic brain injuries in patients. So far, Col. Hack and his team have correctly identified 34 serious brain injuries in patients.
“This will in fact do for brain injury what that test did for chest pain,” Col. Hack said, comparing his findings to advances in heart disease detection in the 1970's. “It’s going to change medicine entirely.”
Further studies are needed before these blood tests will used by neurologists in detecting head injury and brain damage. Until then, many neuroscientists believe these tests may not work in clinical patients.
