Kansas City is testing a new way to park in the Crossroads District of downtown, back-in angled parking. Often cities swap out parallel parking spaces for angled parking spaces simply because the angled spaces allow for more parking spots. The problem with changing to angled spaces is there is limited vision for the driver as they back out of the parking spot. With the back-in angled parking, the driver simply pulls past the space and backs into the slot.
One of the largest supporters of the back-in angled parking spaces are bicycling groups. Cyclists are often the victims of drivers who simply cannot see them as they back out of traditional angled parking spaces. In addition to safety for others on the road, there is also added safety for the driver as they are trying to load or unload their vehicle. Back-in angled parking allows the driver to put packages in the trunk without standing in the street.
The new back-in parking is located on McGee Street for three blocks between 17th Street and 20th Street. Blue instruction signs are posted to help drivers with this new way of parking. There will be fines for pulling forward into these spaces, however, and failure to park correctly will cost the driver $38.50.
The city council is encouraging people to try this new parking system. If successful, the city plans to expand back-in angled parking to other parts of the city.
