Car Versus Train Ends in Fatality in Independence, Kansas

A freight train struck a car after it drove around the flashing railroad gate, killing a female passenger and injuring the driver and another passenger.

The driver of the Ford Escort went around the lowered gates on Pleasant Street near South Avenue in Independence. The westbound Union Pacific freight train collided with the car and pushed it several hundred feet before the engineer could bring the train to a stop.
