Monday's winter blast caused multiple accidents throughout the area Monday and Tuesday as road crews worked to clear streets and highways. Most road crews were working 12-hour shifts in order to get Kansas City streets plowed and crews reported that most major thoroughfares had been cleared. With Tuesday's temperatures dropping and winds picking up, the main concern for streets that have been plowed, is blowing snow.
On Monday night slick and snow-packed roads caused many problems for area drivers. An accident at 75th Street and Wornall caused a car to slide into a fire hydrant, sending water onto Waldo streets for blocks. City crews were able to shut off the water to the hydrant and put down sand and salt to help with traction for other drivers in that area.
Hills in the area were also a major concern. Slick streets along the hill at NW 62nd Street just east of Waukomis Road caused a multiple car pile up involving an ambulance and four other cars.
Road crews in Overland Park said they were not having any trouble with clearing the streets, other than the snow wouldn't stop falling and was stacking up on streets that had already been plowed.
