Driver Who Crashed Killing Kansas City, Missouri Child Had 22 "Priors"

Posted on Mar 31, 2010

The Kansas City driver who caused a multiple car automobile collision that killed a 12 year old child in Kansas City, Missouri on March 27th and injured the child's mother, causing a traumatic brain injury, had been involved in a high speed car chase just 3 weeks earlier. He was driving on a revoked drivers license at the time of the wreck. He had 22 prior convictions for driving on a revoked license, driving while suspended, operating a motor vehicle with no valid drivers license, and careless driving.

On March 6th, driver Clayton Dunlap led police on a car chase during which he drove as fast as 80 mph through residential streets and neighborhoods and people were forced to jump out of the way. He admitted to smoking PCP and marijuana and taking prescription pain pills but passed a breath test. Jackson County prosector Jim Kanatzer noted that his office has tryed driving on a revoked license cases at the state rather than municipal level and this case shows why that is important.

The revelation that Clayton Dunlap had such an extensive record of serious driving infractions, including the March 6th car chase, prior to the deadly car wreck on March 27th infuriates the family of the deceased 12-year old child. The father cannot understand who he was not jailed for repeated serious traffic convictions.

Prosecutors have stated that they did not know about the dangerous March 6th car chase when the fatal car crash occurred on March 27th.
.
The father of the 12 year old who was killed by Clayton Dunlap is seeking justice for the death of his 12 year old son, but he says he is uncertain as to what he deserves. "I don't know what's a fair trade, " he said.
Slayton says that he wants justice for his son, but he's not sure what Dunlap deserves.

"I don't know what's a fair trade," said Slayton. "I don't know why (Dunlap) was out of custody."

The boy's mother Bri Kneisley was also involved in the collision and was seriously injured, left with a traumatic brain injury. While the family readies for the boy's funeral, his mother remains hospitalized from the traumatic brain injury she sustained in the auto collision. According to her boyfriend Mike Vantil, she's suffering from severe pain, is having memory difficulties due to brain injury, and does not yet understand happened to her. She lost her short-term memory and keeps asking about her boy only to be heartbroken repeatedly when told again that he was killed in the wreck. Vantil was also involved in the crash and was injured.

The family has expressed their dismay that nothing could be done to stop driver Clayton Dunlap from driving again following repeated serious traffic infractions. The family believes that he was an obvious danger to society. THe father of the deceased boy is hopeful that this tragic case of wrongful death involving their young Kansas City, Missouri child will result in a tightening of the traffic laws.
