Driving Test Indicates 1 in 5 Drivers Unfit for the Road

The results are in for the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test and the outcome is not good for our nation.   It appears from the study that 1 in 5 drivers currently on the road cannot pass the written driving test if that test was administered today.  That equates to 36.9 million American drivers. 

The average score for all drivers actually increased this year from 76.2% in 2010 to 77.9% in 2011.  Unfortunately, the results suggest that a greater number of drivers lack the basic knowledge, which could lead to dangerous driving situations. 

The good news is that Kansas drivers outscored all other states in driving knowledge with an average score of 82.9%.  Missouri isn't too far behind, coming in eighth in the nation at 81.3%. 

The annual test is given to drivers in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia polling 5,130 licensed drivers between the ages of 16 and 65.  The test is 20 questions taken from state Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) exams.  National data was weighted to percentage of state population, age, gender and ethnicity. 

Overall, men outscored women on the test while the northeast appears to carry the least knowledgable drivers and the midwest the most knowledgable drivers.  Older Americans also fared better on the test with those folks in the 60-65 age group having the highest test average score of 80.3%.
