A dump truck overturned, losing his load of hot asphalt along I-635 Thursday morning around 10:00 a.m. The accident occurred on I-635 near K-5, just north of 34th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. The driver, who was northbound suddenly saw a pedestrian walking down the middle of the interstate. In an effort to avoid hitting the pedestrian, the driver swerved, rolling his truck and spilling hot asphalt along the side of the highway.
Authorities determined the 25-year-old pedestrian was intoxicated as he made his way down the interstate. He was initially a passenger in a vehicle near the accident, and was not hurt in the crash.
Co-workers of the dump truck driver are hailing him a hero for avoiding the pedestrian. The driver was taken to to an area hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.
