Explosion Kills Six at Bartlett Grain Co in Athison, Kansas

A large explosion rocked the Bartlett Grain facility in Atchison, Kansas killing six people and injuring two others.

The explosion is still under investigation, but it did leave major structural damage to the Atchison facility.  Residents as far away as Rushville, Missouri, said they could feel the blast when it happened.

One worker, who escaped injury during the incident, said they had been loading corn onto a rail car for about an hour before they saw the fireball.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported more than 600 explosions at U.S. grain handling facilities in the last 40 years, resulting in 250 fatalities and more than 1,000 injuries.

OSHA said grain dust is combustible and is the main source of fuel for explosions.
