A Fairway man, Frank J. Ross III, 30, has been charged in connection with an accident that happened Sunday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of 35th Street and Euclid Avenue. The police car was headed eastbound on 35th Street when Ross, who was driving a black BMW north on Euclid, ran a stop sign and struck the police car in a classic t-bone crash. The impact was significant enough to push the police cruiser nearly into the front yard of the home on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Both officers were injured, and the officer in the passenger seat suffered several broken bones and a bruised lung. That officer was unconscious following the wreck and had to be cut from the cruiser by rescue crews. Both policemen were sent to an area hospital for treatment. The driver was later released with minor injuries, while the officer in the passenger seat is expected to recover, but with an approximate 3-month recuperation period. No one in the BMW was injured in the crash.
Ross was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.185, more than twice the legal limit, according to court documents. Ross has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault as well as driving while intoxicated. Allegedly Ross and his two companions, one an assistant U.S. Attorney, were on their way home from a Chiefs game when the accident occurred.
