Fatal Auto Accidents Have Increased in Kansas City but Decreased Across State of Missouri

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the number of fatal car accidents in the state of Missouri have seen a decline since the numbers were last calculated in 2009.  Unfortunately while the state-wide numbers are down-- the number of fatal crashes in Kansas City are rising.

In 2011, thirty-six people have been killed in automobile accidents in Kansas City. This number represents a 30% increase from this point last year. As for the state of Missouri, fatal crashes have decreased from 1,257 in 2005 to 878 in 2009-- a 30% decrease.

The most shocking part of the increase in Kansas City crash fatalities is that 63 perecent of those fatal crashes involved a driver who was under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs. The state of Missouri showed a 36% rate.

"The loss of lives to crashes involving an impaired driver are totally preventable," said Kansas City Police Chief Jim Corwin. "We do all we can to prevent this through efforts like DUI saturation enforcement and DUI checkpoints, but we cannot possibly stop everyone who decides to get behind the wheel after imbibing."
