Fatalities down on Kansas City roads thanks to police efforts

The Kansas City Mo. police department is reporting a decrease in the number of auto accident fatalities in KCMO comapred to the same time in 2009.  Last year, through the first five months there were a reported twenty-nine deaths due to car wrecks compared to only twenty-four so far this year.  According to police only half of the fatalities this year have been linked to alcohol or illegal drugs down from a two-thirds estimate from last year.

Kansas City MO police officials have stepped up efforts to curb the number of auto accident fatalities by increasing the number of patrol cars on the streets and setting up random DUI checkpoints.  The increase in police patrols is thanks in part to federal grants given to local law enforcement agencies.

"Click It or Ticket is always big," Kansas City police Officer Jamie Lamb said. "Anytime we have checkpoints anywhere in the city it's a significant deterrent."
